Sometimes people get mad at Google ‘cuz they won’t just take their money and run the ads they write. Worse yet, they won’t even tell you WHY.

“People should think of Google as being their first customer.

“People search Google because they trust it. Your ad on their search engine is an endorsement, and you’re borrowing their identity.”

The fact that the whole world trusts Google and the true meaning and cause of that trust is somewhat overlooked in all the hoopla about their juggernaut success.

People talk about Google’s skyrocketing stock values and Page Rank Formulas and the birth from fledgling lab project at Stanford, and the geek culture and the free 5-star lunches in the employee cafeteria.

But not too many people really ask, why does the world trust Google?

When someone wants to know something, why is the first place they think of looking, Google? Why is Google a verb?

Because Google is the most accurate available representation of what human beings consider important and valuable on the Internet.

Stop and think for a minute… what if there was no such thing as a search engine. How would you ever find anything? We’d all be sitting in our cubicles asking our friends what their favorite bookmarks are.

It’s not even possible to deal with the whole Internet as it is. It’s such a vast thing, you can only deal with some simplified map of it. Google has to present the Internet in a way to you that makes it tidy and comprehensible. So simple, even a six year old can use it.

It’s difficult to appreciate how hard a job this is.

Earlier this year I had a conversation with a brilliant guy who had, for his own reasons, developed his own search engine. You know, one that crawls the web and follows links and rummages through IP addresses and catalogues the pages.

He says to me, “Perry, it was a nightmare. Did you know that literally 90% of the content on the Internet is pure SPAM? You can’t believe the amount of computer resources it took just to explore it, much less sift and sort through it all.”

He wasn’t exaggerating in the slightest. It’s impossible to comprehend how much of the actual Internet is pure garbage. You would never want to deal with the Internet in its raw, unfiltered form.

The “real” World Wide Web, if you could actually look at it, is not much different from the swirling sea of chaos outside the Nebuchadnezzar spaceship in The Matrix.

It teems with viruses, rogue programs, hackers’ contrivances, incoherent pages of robotically generated “content” and excrement from the bowels of the information superhighway.

The most minimal job of a search engine is to make all that rubble invisible to you.

At the root of the world’s trust of Google is Google’s inability to be bought. I say this even though Google sells a billion plus dollars of clicks every month.

Because first of all, what makes Google valuable in the first place is the extreme difficulty in manipulating the organic (free) side of the engine. The editorial side has high standards and hundreds of millions of web surfers experience that every day.

Google is pretty good at recognizing what visitors do when they come to a site that they like, and rewarding likable sites with free listings.

And when you go over to the paid side of Google, they still have standards which continue to climb. A lot of people think, just because they’re showing up with money in hand, means Google ought to shut up and take it.

NOT!

This entitlement belief of “The customer is always right and the customer is me, because I’m putting up the money here” is actually backwards. It creates an instant adversarial relationship with THE gatekeeper you have to pass muster with before you get to be on the mainstream of the Internet.

The fallacy of that is, you are not the customer. Google is.

On the Internet, the customer is not the person who provides the advertising dollars. It’s the person who consumes the content and buys things from the advertisers. Google is the customer’s advocate.

The day they cease to be that is the day their flanks are wide open for a competitor to eat their lunch.

Though Google is mighty and has built up a huge lead over all their rivals, their place in the world is not eternally secure. They have to keep inflating their expectations of advertisers and content providers in order for the Internet to evolve.

Ask yourself the question:

“Google, what do you want? How can I serve your best customers?”

That’s how you get Google love, people love, link love, and traffic love.

If you had a big dream of making a mint with AdSense on your very popular forum, you were probably weeping after looking at the actual bottom line once you did so.

The fact is, AdSense doesn’t work so well on forums. In fact, none of the AdSense Case Studies are about forums.

Why do forums do so badly to Adsense? There are 3 main reasons.

Visitors in the Wrong Frame of Mind

If someone is doing research for a particular product or service, and they land on your article regarding that product or service, they are likely buy minded. They are actually looking to buy.

With forums, however, most people are interaction minded. They’re not looking to buy something. Rather, they are looking to discuss something.

Those two frames of mind are very different. In the first case the visitor may click on an AdSense ad because they are shopping around and want to explore the options. In the second case the visitor isn’t paying attention to anything on the page but what people are saying. They might follow a recommended product link posted by a user, but they are far less likely to click on an AdSense ad.

Repeat Visitors Make For Low CTR

Another reason why CTR on forums is low is because most of the visitors to a forum have been there dozens of times before. They’ve either already seen and visited the ads they were interested in, or they’re so used to seeing them that they start to ignore the Adsense ad. (read: “ad blindness”).

Besides, you may show 500,000 page views on a forum for the month, but if the average repeat visitor views 10 pages a day reading threads, then your actually number of visitors is far lower. So your stats themselves may be deceiving.

Ad-Targeting is Tough on Forums

Finally, it’s tough to target Adsense ads on forums, because discussions tend to wander around and around, touching on this and that as the main topic is discussed. Any human could tell you the basic topic of a discussion like that, but it’s a lot harder for computers to figure out–even if it is Google’s computers.

So you often get mis-targeted Adsense ads on forums, and that, too, brings down your click-through rate.

What Can Be Done?

Google offers a number of forum optimization techniques for AdSense on their Adsense blog. They will help, but don’t expect miracles.

Also, AdSense guru Joel Comm’s AdSense Secrets ebook has an outstanding chapter on how to make AdSense work with forums and Internet communities. If you haven’t read his ebook yet, I recommend you do so.

Here’s another method you may want to try. Remember that your forum visitors are usually very interested in the subject matter–interested enough to go through the registration process for your forum and discuss it!

What you can do is leverage those visitors by adding a place to your site for articles and product reviews related to the forum subject. When you post a new article or review, let the forum members know about it: post a thread requesting feedback on the article, or better yet, email your member list requesting that they read and review the article.

This accomplishes two things:

1) It reminds people who haven’t been to your forum in a while that it exists (see this related post about email list building). It’s easy to register for a forum and forget about it. But a friendly request for an article review can reactivate some inactive members, which creates more content on your forum when they post and can generate more revenue from clicks.

2) It gets your members out of “interaction” mode by pulling them away from a discussion and into an article, which increases the likelihood that they will click on the related Adsense ads.

Summing it all Up

There’s no reasons why forums can’t be profitable with AdSense, though their click-through rates almost never achieve the double-digits. Most forum owners would be happy to have a low single-digit CTR. But following the techniques above can help you improve that bottom line and find new ways of leveraging your user-base.

Remember, too, that all of the forum content is created for you for free by your members, so it’s really all free money anyway.

However the list of difficulties is not over and we continue sharing tips about what cause the account to get closed and practical recommendations about how to avoid it.

Hidden texts.

Don't use them, this is not wise and Google is very angry when you hide the texts from visitors, trying to cheat the bots with that. We are not going to prove here that this strategy is giving no SEO value these days – just take it by default that it is not working and can get the account closed.

Page cloaking.

Page cloaking works like this: special program serves the robots of search engines with special optimized page and visitors see absolutely another page. This strategy is also a big no-no with Google. Maybe they will not catch you from the very beginning and you can survive for a week or month or year. But then your account will be closed and, maybe, the site gets kicked off from the Google index.

Link farms.

This is a disputable issue because some Internet marketers gave examples of link farms that are "blessed" by Google and purchase of backlinks from that farms does no harm. However, you do not know for sure if this or that link farm is ok for Google. It is even more fair to say that most of the link farms are hated by Google.

That is why getting backlinks from the link farms is a sure way to get problems with Google, get a site or blog de-indexed and even AdSense account terminated.

Doorways.

Doorways are close to cloaking pages, but with one difference. Doorway is a keyword optimized page that later on sends a visitor to a "normal" page. There have been times when doorways worked and worked pretty nice, and that is why Google started to fight them.

That is why no to doorways. Doorway as a notion has very bad reputation in Google's eyes.

Avoid these strategies and your chances to get site de-listed from index and AdSense account closed will get down to minimum.

Surely don't expect that Google will tell you how much money was paid by AdWords advertisers for each click that was made on your site. Why? Because Google decided that this way it will be better. We can love it, we can hate it – but this is how Google decided to do that

Those who do not like – can simply not put AdSense codes on their pages and hit the big Google into the very heart No really, if about 30% of the sites in the net take AdSense ads away, this will be a serious jab to Google, but as they keep using the lovely ads – this is the best proof that everybody is happy.

When you are going to estimate your future profits with Google AdSense program you need to take 2 factors into account:

- your traffic volume
- your traffic source

Volume is the amount of people who come to your site or blog, come on a regular basis.

Source is from where these people come. It is proven by real case experience that people who come from search engines are very good clickers on the AdSense ads.

Then it all comes down to how you position the ads on your pages and what click through rate (CTR) you will have. 5% CTR is considered to be very good. Over 10% CTR – something you can boast about.

And the last thing to consider – your niche. Surely advertiser in investments, loans, mortgages, health insurances, real estate are paying more per click than cheaper niches. But you can compensate it with getting plugged into less competitive niche.

Now, let's do the calculations.

You have 1,000 unique visitors per day to your blog about mortgage (tough niche, by the way). Out of them you know by your traffic stats that 500 come from search engines. You also know that for the traffic which comes from search engines you have 5% CTR. And you know that averagely and advertiser in this niche is paying $1.00

Then it means your average profits for the part of traffic which comes from search engines should be:

500 people X $1.00 X 0.05 = $25.00 (daily)

Surely these are averages, life is more flexible and unexpected. But now you can think in terms of some figures.

It never ceases to amaze me the amount of mis-information that people who regard themselves as experts, spread around the net and forums. It’s no wonder that anyone who is trying to get into internet marketing gets confused and unfortunately put off.

Maybe that’s the aim, cynical comment warning! These mis-informants are making a bit of money and don’t want any fresh competition! They can’t handle the truth competition. Fact is the net’s so big there’s room for everyone.

Anyway back to Adsense. Of course it still makes sense. I’ve been making a steady income from Adsense for almost a year. Not enough to retire on yet, but steady.

With all the talk of how Google is the enemy and the slaps etc. you really need to put this all into perspective. Why do Google run Adsense, no brainer really, to MAKE MONEY!

So why would they want to stop you from making money? Answer is they don’t. If you don’t make money then neither do they!

Google has a responsibilty, mostly to itself, to ensure that anything promoted by them is ethical and in line with guidelines and obviously they are going to stop anyone trying to cheat the system.

Play by the rules and you can make money, lots of money.

How to find a balance between giving away traffic (people who click ads go away from your site or blog) and being happy about it?

First of all you should take into account this simple tip.

Adsense links (link units) are not getting that much clicks. That is why if you place these link units on the pages were you'd like visitors to do other things (not click the link units) – you will increase the conversions of downloading some free stuff, or signing up for the course, or clicking the affiliate link buried in the text. So, the link units are good as 'scare off' to make visitors do the stuff that you want.

2nd tier in AdSense program. Well, Google is not offering this feature, but you can.

After you have registered, from the same page please login to your Google AdSense account and agree to the Google AdSense Terms and Conditions to proceed.

Then you get to a report page with detailed status on how your AdSense ads are converting and how much they are bringing you.

On the top of the page you will find the setup section. This is the place where you generate special code of the ad that later on is posted on your web site and turns into typical Google ad.

Google AdSense program offers you the options of AdSense for text (textual ads, plus you can choose it to be text and graphics), ad which is a search box and ad that refers people to Google AdSense program.
 
"My Account" tab allows you to set up details about your account, payment and tax information.

To add a text ad on your site: enable the cookies in your browser, go to "AdSense Setup" tab and click the "AdSense for content" link. This will give you a choice between ad units and link units. Ad units contain text and or images concerning a certain site for each unit with some description. Link units have links to certain types.

Then you need to choose your add format and colors. If you’re trying to optimize a page for a popular keyword that has alot of competition, take a close look at the related keyword phrases.

For instance, let’s say you wanted to target the keyword “marketing”, that was searched for over 240,000 times on Overture alone in a month, there are 587,000,000 websites on Google competeing for that keyword, the keyword marketing is FAR too general and obviously has too much competition, sure if you got ranked #1 (would be very hard to do!) you’ll get a flood of traffic, but it wouldn’t be very targeted traffic.

Be more specific, target keyword PHRASES.

Let’s try “internet marketing” which was searched for 80,000 times on Overture in one month and has 62,800,000 sites on Google competing for the same phrase, that’s far better, not brilliant, but at least you’re more targeted now, but we need to drill down a little further to give us a fighting chance of getting good rankings on the search engines.

Now, under the keywords “internet marketing” over at Overture, searchers also used the following phrases:-

The biggest reason for that is click fraud. Click fraud in simple words is clicking on ads for the purpose of costing the advertiser money.
 
Surely a site or blog owner would never do a click fraud, because the account will get terminated and money on it lost. But 3rd parties can do that, for example, to kick you off the business for a while.

How to prevent click fraud?

Check your access logs. For any suspicious activity you should contact Google directly and instantly. You can do it from their official page that accepts invalid clicks reports from the AdSense users – https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/request.py?contact=invalid_clicks_contact

The sooner you do that, the better. You must make Google team sees that you are:

- not affiliated with these invalid clicks
- you do not want money from this illegal stuff
- you are ready to any kind of cooperation to stop that stuff

What can be a suspicious bulk of clicks?

For example, too many clicks from the same IP over a short period of time.

But today click frauders went further and use special solutions that automatically put different IPs. Then even try to hind behind the search engines. It can look that 100 people came to you from MSN or Yahoo using one and the same search term – look for the search term, because it can tell a lot.

If you are not 1st page for this term in the search engine that 'sends' you clicks – fraud is possible.

Also disable ads for your own IP address and local geographic area. This can prevent accidents and will not make Google mistake another user as you. This can be done through a htaccess file.

Also keep your ads off on pop ups and pop unders.

Do not put ads on content sites that promote illegal activity or tampering of the legal rights of other people or business.

And the rule of a thumb – be the first to contact Google. Even if you did a mistake and the clicks were not fraudulent, still it is better to make Google see that you do your part of the job.
